Introduction
Behind many small businesses in the San Luis Valley is a familiar story: a skilled tradesperson who started out simply trying to make a living and gradually learned the many other skills required to keep a business running.
For the founder of Craftsman Digital, that journey began in construction and eventually led into the world of digital marketing.
Today, Craftsman Digital helps small businesses build an online presence, attract new customers, and simplify the often confusing world of digital tools and marketing systems.
But the path to starting the company was shaped by years of firsthand experience running a small business in the valley.

The Story Behind the Business
Craftsman Digital officially formed as a business in November of 2024, but its roots stretch much further back.
The founder moved to the San Luis Valley in 2011 after a long winter drive from Texas during a heavy snowstorm — a memorable introduction to the region.
“I moved here in January during a crazy winter blizzard,” he said. “I drove on ice all the way from Texas. My introduction to the valley was a cold and bitter one, but I loved it anyway.”
At the time, he was working in the construction trades and had experience across a wide range of skilled labor, including framing, cabinetry, flooring, plumbing, and remodeling.
Like many workers in seasonal industries, however, steady employment could be difficult to maintain.
“I found it very difficult trying to provide for my family,” he explained. “In construction you’re often the last person hired and the first person laid off when things slow down in the winter.”
Eventually, that cycle pushed him to start his own handyman business out of necessity.
He began the way many small business owners do — knocking on doors, handing out business cards, and learning marketing and customer acquisition through trial and error.
“I started just going door to door and learning business the hard way,” he said. “I was making my own business cards online and doing a lot of research on how to get customers.”
Over time, he realized that the part of business he enjoyed most wasn’t necessarily the construction work itself.
“I found that I actually enjoyed business and marketing more than the work,” he said. “And I kept seeing how many small business owners struggled with the same problems I had.”
That realization eventually led to the creation of Craftsman Digital.

What the Business Offers
Craftsman Digital focuses on digital marketing services designed specifically for small businesses.
Services include website development, branding, search engine optimization, online advertising, and automated marketing systems that help businesses manage customer communication and lead generation.
The goal, according to the founder, is not just to build websites but to remove as much marketing work as possible from busy business owners.
“I try to be a full-service partner with my clients, taking everything off their plate that I can,” he said.
Many of the systems he builds involve automation and workflow tools that reduce the amount of manual work required to manage marketing.
“I’ve spent years learning the technical side of these systems,” he said. “Most business owners are just too busy running their company to deal with all of that.”
Craftsman Digital primarily works with small service-based businesses, especially those run by skilled tradespeople and craftsmen.
“Most of the people I work with are very involved in the production side of their business,” he said. “They’re working 60 hours a week just keeping things running.”
For those clients, the goal is simple: make marketing work without adding more stress.

Serving the San Luis Valley
Although the business can work with clients outside the region, the San Luis Valley remains its primary focus.
The founder has spent most of the past decade living in the valley and says the region’s landscape and lifestyle are a big part of what makes it special.
“I really enjoy how wide and open the valley is,” he said. “You can see from one end to the other. I love the mountains, and I love the cool summers.”
After spending time working in places like Florida and Texas, the difference is noticeable.
“Being somewhere flat where you can’t see mountains on the horizon really grates on me,” he said. “And I definitely can’t stand the heat.”
The valley’s rural environment also shapes how businesses operate.
With towns spread far apart, visibility can be one of the biggest challenges for small companies.

Challenges and Rewards of Running a Local Business
Running a small business is rarely easy, but rural communities bring their own unique challenges.
“In a rural area, the biggest challenge is just being seen,” the founder said. “Everything is so spread out. You might have to go miles to reach the next town.”
Businesses that aren’t located on major highways or in busy downtown areas often rely heavily on online visibility to reach potential customers.
“If you don’t have a big storefront with a huge sign drawing people in, you have to find a way to build that visibility online,” he explained.
He often compares digital marketing to a modern version of roadside signage.
“That’s really what digital marketing is,” he said. “It’s the digital version of having a storefront and a sign for everyone to see.”
However, building that visibility online often requires technical knowledge that many small business owners simply don’t have time to learn.
That’s where his work comes in.
“I focus on outcomes,” he said. “Most business owners don’t care about owning a website. They care about the results the website brings.”

Looking Ahead
For the future, Craftsman Digital is focused on improving how it serves its clients.
Technology continues to evolve quickly, and keeping up with new tools and systems has become a large part of the work.
“As technology grows, complexity grows,” he said. “And with complexity comes stress and overwhelm.”
His goal is to stay ahead of those changes so business owners don’t have to.
“I just want to keep learning better ways to serve my clients and help them grow their businesses without all that extra pressure.”
There is also a personal goal behind the business.
His daughters have begun studying graphic design and have already earned certificates in the field.
“I’d love for this to eventually grow into a family business that I can pass on to them,” he said.
